Five ways to Look Refreshed at 50
Do you ever feel like you’re stuck in the middle – too “old” for a mini dress, too young for a muumuu? Just thinking about a muumuu makes me picture Mrs. Roper on Three’s Company reruns on Nick at Nite (Anyone else?)
Let’s be real – dressing and feeling refreshed at 50 can feel like a challenge.
The struggle is real! Our bodies change. What worked a few years ago doesn’t always feel right anymore. We change and grow – shouldn’t our style evolve too?
The good news? You don’t need to throw everything out and start over. A few simple shifts can help you feel fresh, modern, and totally YOU.
As a personal stylist in San Antonio, focused on sustainable style, I work with women who feel like they’re in a rut but don’t know where to start. If that sounds familiar, don’t worry, –I’ve got you! Here are Five Ways to Refresh Your Look (and energy) at 50. Try one, try them all, and make them your own.
1. Refresh with Color. 🎨
You know how you get that itch to repaint a room when you need a change? Same thing applies to your wardrobe. It’s easy to stick to colors that feel safe, but why not try something exciting and new? Experiment with a new shade you haven’t tried before – it might just be the boost you need. Color has the power to shift your energy, boost your mood, and make you feel vibrant again.
Try something new – if you want to feel calm and confident, wear blues or greens. If you need an energy boost, go for yellows, oranges or reds. Remember, your most flattering colors are the ones that make you look good and feel good.
✨ Monica’s Story: Monica, a busy mom, hated shopping and usually just grabbed whatever the mannequins were wearing. After a color analysis, she realized some colors made her glow while others washed her out. She took a chance on a cut crystal necklace in a violet color—totally out of her comfort zone—and got so many compliments that she sent me pictures of her “look.” I could tell she felt amazing!
👉 Try this: Wear one color outside your usual rotation this week. See how it makes you feel. If you’re unsure about your best colors, let’s book a color analysis and find your WOW colors.
2. Choose Fabrics that Flatter. 👗
Ever try on something that looks great on the hanger but clings to all the wrong places? It’s not your body—it’s the fabric. Lightweight fabrics can be tricky. They tend to highlight every curve (even the ones you’d rather not emphasize). A medium-weight fabric skims the body instead of clinging, giving you a polished, put-together look.
And let’s talk about quality. Fast fashion brands use cheaper materials that don’t last and don’t flatter. A well-made piece in the right fabric will not only look better—it’ll actually survive the wash!
👉 Try this: Next time you shop, feel the weight of the fabric. Look for medium-weight materials that drape well. If it clings in all the wrong places, put it back. Be choosy – a small shift in fabrics can make all the difference!
3. Watch Your Patterns. 🌸
For some reason, retailers love putting women over 40 in big floral and paisley prints. (Why? WHO decided this?) But here’s the deal—patterns should work for YOU, not the other way around.
The trick? Scale matters. Large, bold prints can overwhelm a petite frame, while tiny prints might not have enough presence on a taller frame. The right pattern should enhance your look, not swallow you up.
👉 Try this: Stand in front of the mirror and see if your pattern compliments you or wears you. Take a picture if you’re unsure—it’s easier to judge from a little distance. Your clothes should enhance you, not hide you.
4. Add some Flair.✨
Accessories are an easy way to refresh your look without buying a whole new wardrobe. A statement necklace, a bold pair of earrings, or a chic scarf can instantly make your outfit feel intentional and stylish.
Here’s something fun—we all have a “style personality.” Are you classic and elegant? Boho and relaxed? Edgy and modern? Knowing this makes accessorizing easier because you’ll naturally pick pieces that feel like you.
Want to add flair on a budget? Vintage stores and thrift shops are a goldmine for unique, high-quality accessories at budget-friendly prices. You can find one-of-a-kind brooches, silk scarves, or cool retro handbags that add instant personality to your outfit. Plus, it’s a fun way to shop sustainably!
👉 Try this: Add one fun accessory today. A vintage brooch, a cool hat, a pop of color—start small, have fun with it. Need help figuring out your style personality? Let’s chat!
5. Mind your Messages. 💬
Like it or not, what we wear sends a message—to others and to ourselves. The question is: What story is your style telling? This isn’t about vanity—it’s about self-care. Taking extra care with your clothes, skin, and grooming isn’t shallow; it’s a form of self-respect. When you feel good, you radiate confidence, and people respond to that energy.
If you’re thinking, “I don’t have time for this,” I hear you. But ask yourself:
❓ What’s stopping me from prioritizing my own confidence?
❓ What would it feel like to walk into a room and KNOW I look amazing?
Because you deserve that feeling.
👉 Try this: Take five extra minutes today to do something that makes you feel put together. A little effort goes a long way.
